Musical Genre: New Wave/Synth Pop
Formed: 1980

ABC was formed in 1980 when singer Martin Fry interviewed Mark White and Stephen Singleton, from the electronic band Vice Versa, for his fanzine, Modern Drugs. They asked him to join the band, and he not only did, but he took control, changed the name to ABC, and changed the music to be more pop-oriented. They were joined by Mark Lickley and David Robinson (later replaced by David Palmer).

Their first album, The Lexicon of Love, was a huge success in the U.K. and the U.S., where "The Look of Love" and "Poison Arrow" were hits you can still find on just about any 80s compilation that has ever been released. The follow-up, Beauty Stab, didn't do as well, but then How To Be A ... Zillionaire! also did well, with such hits as "Be Near Me".

ABC have kept going and are still going to this day, although the only major hit they had since then was "When Smokey Sings" in 1987. They seem to be doing well now, however, since there seems to be a big market for 80's revivals (and it's about time if you ask me!).
