Sum-41 To Be Deported? - Thursday, July 26, 2007 at 14:06
|
It appears that Sum 41 lead singer Deryk Whibley angered a reporter with his lyrics so much that the reporter threatened to have him deported. Sum 41, along with almost every other band these days, wrote a song containing "Bush-Hating" lyrics. The actual lyrics read, "The president of the United States of America is dead... And now the president's dead because they blew off his head..."
The reporter took it so far that he apparently called upon politicians to use their power to deport the Canadian band back to Canada on account of the lyrics.
Deryk Whibley commented on the issue: "He (the reporter) went to the House minority leader in the States, who tried to have me deported, trying to say I'm threatening the president."
O.K., I didn't write this one but I just had to comment. This reporter needs to understand a few things about our country. First of all, we have this little thing called the first amendment that lets Sum-41, or anyone else, say pretty much whatever they want about the president without fear of retribution (as a matter of fact this same first amendment allows this "reporter" to have his own job, rather than just being a mouthpiece for the state and their party line). And no, Canadians are not exempt from the first amendment. Just saying that the President is dead in song lyrics does not constitute a death threat, that's like saying you can't write a fictional short story about something like that happening.
Second of all, rather than trying to deport everyone who hates Bush (after all, to do that he'd have to deport about 86% of our own citizens - has he seen Bush's latest approval ratings?), maybe he should be wondering just why so many people and bands in and out of this country hate Bush enough to write these songs in the first place, and maybe see what he can do to fix that problem.
And since when do reporters say who gets deported?
Well, if Sum-41 do get deported, they probably will have gotten the better deal. After all, if this country ever does get to the point where people can't say what they want about the President without fear of retribution, then I, for one, would not want to continue to live here. |
